SATURDAY PUZZLE — It feels like awhile since we’ve had a Sam Ezersky puzzle, although his bee buzzes every day and he is also in the Letter Box so it’s possible that some of you have positively had enough of him. I kid! It has really been only a couple of months, and what’s not to love?

Mr. Ezersky’s grids always have a conversational quality, replete with pop culture references that are usually multigenerational and rarely fusty. Today we have some product placements, some entries from his Netflix queue, and in the first and last across entries a pair of amusing bookends suitable for fans of either Kim K or Thackeray.

Lots of very fresh clues and entries today; I liked ROSARY and RIOT ACT, SCAB and BURL. I had “ear” for OAR for a long time, for some reason, possibly mixing up charades with rebuses, being bad at both.

1A: This is probably not a very obscure reference, although it is not exactly what I think of when I think of the gossip website and broadcast that comprise the TMZ franchise — I leaned toward “TMZ on TV" before TMZLIVE. I did not know that TMZ stood for “thirty-mile zone,” an imaginary circle around an intersection in Hollywood that is used to denote local (rather than on-location) cinematic and TV productions. It’s not something I ever thought about, but for decades movies and shows have been produced in this zone, as studios and unions agreed that work done within this circle would be local and therefore tons cheaper, which is really critical to the continued centralization of Hollywood. It is also why a lot of exterior shots probably seem familiar, if you are good at noticing that kind of thing (“Avatar,” which features the Navi of 5D, was filmed on a sound stage in the TMZ — and in New Zealand).

36A: Perhaps because of the unusual arrangement of letters here and at 29D, this little portion of the grid was the last to fill in for me. I thought of the Hunza people first, misremembering them as “Hunzai,” before figuring out BHUTANI. This has been clued in the past as “Native of the Land of the Thunder Dragon,” which is pretty fabulous. Bhutan is also where they have the “Gross National Happiness” metric; when I think of Bhutan I always think of this interesting story about the introduction of television to the culture there.

39A: Oh, Sam. With his sunny disposition, I’m sure his BAY TREES are verdant, and piquant. Mine come into the house, shudder a few times and lose their leaves faster than a startled porcupine drops its needles.

50A: So much content, so much to see, so many shows gliding by on the streaming services — they are familiar enough by name to fill in, as ORPHAN BLACK is here, but I have no clue what they’re really about. The Times describes this show as a little like “The X-Files,” which I love, so thanks for the recommendation, Mr. Ezersky.

2D: This is the cackle Sam’s talking about:

The next job is to spell it — I always use a “u” in the second position but today we need to enter MWAHAHAHA, which I think looks like an air kiss and a funny joke. No matter, this is one of those vernacular terms like MOMMA that can vary. Think of all the evil laughter in history — the witches alone make a cacophony.

33D: Another television reference here. “The O.C.” goes back a few years, to the early aughts, but this is a comparatively recent genre, since most serious shows that sought a young audience before the 90s weren’t really TEEN DRAMA — they were soap operas, or family shows like “Family” or “Little House on the Prairie.” I guess teenagers were just less dramatic back in the day. I watched “My So-Called Life” and would like to think that it was influential as far as this goes, but the trendsetter was probably “Beverly Hills 90210.”

44D: This character has red hair but she also has a tail — the little mermaid, ARIEL. You might have thought of Merida, the Scottish princess from “Brave.”

I hid a Horcrux in the NW corner of this puzzle. Can’t you tell?

Yes, my name’s there at 37-Down by coincidence, but I built the whole grid around the NW; with those eye-popping letter combos, it should offer a glimpse into my twisted cruciverbal soul.
