SATURDAY PUZZLE — Another Saturday, another rummage through the miscellaneous drawer in a genius’s brain. Today’s Sam Trabucco grid created one of those cosmic connections in my own mind, sort of a dumbed-down madeleine moment of “involuntary memory.” It’s just that I once had the most perfect cup of coffee ever, and I can’t remember where it was, although it was almost definitely somewhere in New York. I know it was a VIENNA COFFEE and I have been trying to replicate it ever since, off and on. I get frustrated and give up, forget it ever happened, then something like this reminds me, in an inexpressible way, of that one delicacy from I-don’t-even-remember-when.
There were other tidbits in this puzzle, of course, to make it enjoyable. Mr. Trabucco always uses a lot of fresh entries, and we have 11 debuts and many more rarities and oddities to contend with.
I was trampled by the southwest coast of this puzzle, which was probably a piece of cake for anyone up on their tiny cars, but no matter. There were really good, funny and original entries running through the whole grid. I was surprised and delighted by clues for TAP SHOES, EGO TRIP and THE CONGA, to name a few.
I got tripped up by “tent pole” for TENT PEGS (and had “ark” for ART) and I’ve never heard of DRAWMEN. But we’ve seen this entry before in the puzzle, and it reminded me of that moment in “The Graduate” that I think of all the time these days when we hear about continent-sized piles of shopping bags in the ocean.
17A: For a modest swimsuit, the BURKINI has made a racket in the European tabloids. It’s a portmanteau of burqa and bikini, both of which have also inspired outrage and horror on the streets and shorelines of the world. I took 2D to be “redid” instead of REDUX, giving me “birkini” for a minute, which would have been a swimsuit with a fancy little buckle and a five-figure price.
31A: If you ski (or even just shovel snow every so often) you know the spectrum between powder and icy slush. Luxurious, light powder is DRY SNOW, which happens when the ice crystals that make up the snow comprise hardly any water. The fluffiness lets you float and fly through it, like a cloud. FAST ICE, elsewhere in the grid, refers to ice that’s fastened to a coastline and held in place, not fast-moving. These are both debuts.
38A: Anyone evolve from “lawn” to “sown” to MOWN here, or something like that?
41A: This modern expression was the first I inked in, smugly and in reverse. For some reason I thought “zero inbox” was the term, rather than INBOX ZERO, which sounds a little techno-military if you ask me, but I’m very comfortable with inbox 24,560. Did you know that one person is credited with the concept, which you can learn all about in an hourlong presentation?
50A: A really infernal little meta-misdirection, I had “culled” for “Took in” for absolutely ever today. I didn’t know my MG’s enough, and there was the 41A debacle above, and I’d say that in this case I got GULLED, i.e., duped, i.e., I was gullible. I don’t know why I didn’t make that connection before the moment I started to write this down! There probably isn’t a connection between sea gulls and getting gulled (which probably derives from gullet, and the dupe’s act of swallowing just about anything). But sea gulls are tricky!
28D: It’s such a cute name, I have no idea why I needed every letter filled in beyond a shadow of a doubt to figure out MG MIDGET.
35D: I solved this before I saw Mr. Trabucco's notes and made a mental note of how academic this clue seemed for KNOWLES, given the modern alternative, and sure enough he commented to much the same effect. Still, “A Separate Peace” was one of those best-loved books from that huge list PBS made last year. I know I had to read it once in school and don’t remember a whit.
ALRIGHTY THEN is one of the first entries I ever decided I was going to seed a themeless with. My first few tries didn’t end up working out, so I’m thrilled that it fit as a seed into this really finicky grid, as something like the two hundredth thing I tried in the slot. I hope solvers like the grid as much as I ended up liking it! I’ve pretty much stopped making grids like this because they’re so frustrating (often requiring literally hundreds of complete iterations), but I do like how this one turned out, especially the middle.
Also, lest my gay card be revoked, please rest assured that my original clue for KNOWLES did in fact refer to Beyoncé.
